Basically, a morpheme is the “smallest grammatical unit.” It isn’t the same thing as a word, and yet many words are morphemes. The distinction turns on whether the unit (the morpheme or word) can stand on its own. Words have to have that kind of independence, while morphemes don’t require it. The kind of meaning that it encodes depends on what type of morpheme it is. For instance, lexical morphemes primarily encode semantic information (e.g. [house], [dog], [appear]); functional morphemes primarily encode grammatical or morpho-syntactic information (e.g. [-s], [-ion], [dis-]), such as tense, number and word class.
