During the early Indian troubles on the frontier he served for a time as a soldier. John Peter Hoffman was one of the earliest settlers in the Wiconisco Valley, now called the Lykens Valley.In 1893, the Lykens Valley No. 2 slope was sunk 1,221 feet and in 1897 a tunnel was driven 915 feet connecting the No. 1 and No. 2 vein slopes. In 1898, new and powerful hoisting engines were erected at the No. 1 vein slope and in 1899 the sinking of the water hoist shaft was started and completed October 13, 1900 at a depth of 907 feet.
