Jun 7, 2020 · Crinoids. This site contains some of the largest crinoid stems I've ever seen. While most are 3/8 of an inch in diameter, we found many much larger. The really big ones were nearly an inch in diameter, with a small rounded five point star shaped central canal. Countless smaller stems are seen as well, forming much of the grey colored Crinoids were actually astonishingly beautiful back in the day. It’s difficult to determine colors, but there’s strong evidence that they were brightly colored, in fact some people called crinoids sea roses because of this. Crinoids are still around, but their body shape is different, you can see some modern crinoids here:

This slab is covered with complete and nearly complete specimens of one species of crinoid, Glyptocrinus decadactylus, and is one of the largest and most spectacular examples of fossil crinoid preservation ever found in the Cincinnatian Series (Late Ordovician Period, 450 million years ago).Crinoids are marine animals belonging to the phylum Echinodermata and the class Crinoidea.
