Ford F150 4X4 STX. I had the grinding sound coming from under my truck that I thought was caused by the solenoid. I took it to the Ford dealership and the repair started out being the solenoid. Cost me 500.00 for that. Two days later same issue.Shifting in/out of 4X4, and noise disappears going into 4H, usually indicates an IWE problem. Doesn't matter the mileage, it can happen at anytime. Sounds somewhat like you're describing a wheelbearing, but noise disappearing is a pretty good indications of an IWE. As always, the checkvalve and/or solenoid are suspect, as well as a leak in hoses.

The IWE system is what locks and unlocks the front hubs when you change back and forth from 2WD and 4WD. The system works off of vacuum and functions a little counter-intuitively in that it uses vacuum to keep the hubs unlocked for 2WD and shuts off the vacuum to lock the front hubs for 4WD.I have a 2012 F150 Platinum with 4x4. I originally heard a grinding noise from passenger side. Assumed it was the IWE system. I changed the solenoid and it went away for a couple days but came back. I checked the vacuum and it looked good. Changed the check valve. It's definitely not an issue with the pads / rotors etc; those are all new. At first I was thinking it seemed like an ABS issue; the noise is similar to when ABS engages (at least the humming part, not so much the clicking).
